NBA star Walker Kessler had an extra special reason to celebrate after Sunday’s game – his girlfriend Abbie Stockard was just crowned Miss America.
The 23-year-old Utah Jazz center was playing in Orlando when he got the incredible news. His coach Will Hardy shared the moment with him right after their 105-92 win over the Magic.
“This is insane. I don’t know what I did to deserve this. Holy Moly,” Stockard wrote on Instagram after winning the crown. She was one of 11 finalists in the competition’s 97th year.
Kessler couldn’t contain his pride, posting a heartfelt message to his girlfriend: “Congratulations Abbie! I am so proud of you and everything you stand for. Your hard work and trust in the Lord has awarded you with this incredible opportunity!”
Talk about perfect timing – Stockard won her crown in Orlando, the same city where Kessler was putting up impressive numbers that night with 10 points and 17 rebounds.
She’s now the fourth Miss Alabama to win the prestigious title, which comes with a $50,000 scholarship. Currently studying at Auburn University, Stockard had shared her excitement just hours before the final: “As I step into this evening, I am filled with excitement, honor, and gratitude.”
The couple has strong ties to Auburn – it’s where Kessler became an All-American in 2021-22 after transferring from North Carolina.
Kessler’s been making waves of his own this season. The young center has emerged as one of the NBA’s elite defenders, averaging 10.3 points, 11.4 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game. He’s also been incredibly efficient, shooting 71% from the floor.
The news even caught the attention of the NBA on TNT crew, with Charles Barkley and his colleagues celebrating the couple’s success with a playful “War Eagle” – Auburn’s famous battle cry.
