Al Horford Receives Dominican Republic’s Highest Honor

In June, Al Horford made history by becoming the first player from the Dominican Republic to win an NBA championship.

Celebrating with Family and Friends:

Last week, the 38-year-old brought the Larry O’Brien Trophy to his homeland. He thought it was just a celebration with loved ones.

But there was a surprise waiting for him.

A Special Honor:

During the weekend, President Luis Abinader awarded Horford the Order of Merit of Duarte, Sanchez, and Mella in the degree of Knight. This is the highest honor in the country.

Horford didnโ€™t see it coming.

“I knew I was going to meet the president,” he said after meeting with President Abinader. “But I didn’t know I was gonna get the highest award for the country. So, very special for me, very special for my family. I feel very proud right now, very overwhelmed just a lot of emotions. Very, very special day for me today.”

Early Life and Career:

Horford spent his early years in Puerto Plata before moving to America to chase his basketball dreams. After high school in Michigan, he won two NCAA titles with Florida Gators.

His 17-year NBA career includes five All-Star selections and one All-NBA team spot. Fans think winning that elusive championship might have secured his Hall of Fame spot.

We believe he deserves it!

Looking Ahead:

To further cement his legacy, another championship could do wonders. The Celtics are favorites to repeat next season. Horford played a crucial role in their recent finals win over Dallas by starting all five games and averaging solid stats: 7 points, 6.2 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 1.2 steals per game.
