In the 2024-25 season, the Milwaukee Bucks finished with a 48-34 record, landing fifth in the East and setting up a first-round playoff matchup against the Pacers. The result? A disappointing 4-1 series loss to Indiana.
The Bucks haven’t been sitting idle this offseason. They’ve made some key moves, signing big man Myles Turner to a multi-year deal and bringing in veteran guard Cole Anthony.
Bobby Portis isn’t having any of the doubt surrounding his team. In a recent interview with ESPN Milwaukee, he fired back at critics who don’t see the Bucks as championship contenders.
“I mean, what’s wrong with our team? Why can’t we do it this year? The only thing wrong with us is people being hurt,” Portis said about the Bucks’ championship chances.
It’s been a drama-filled summer in Milwaukee.
After their playoff exit, the front office made the tough call to waive Damian Lillard, buying out his remaining contract and watching the nine-time All-Star return to Portland.
This move freed up valuable cap space, allowing them to land Turner from the Pacers.
Meanwhile, rumors about Giannis Antetokounmpo potentially leaving town have been swirling for months.
Portis isn’t buying it. During the same ESPN Milwaukee interview, he emphasized his teammate’s commitment, saying “Giannis bleeds green. That’s all I can say.”
He specifically called out ESPN’s Shams Charania, who suggested Antetokounmpo would need to leave Milwaukee to have another shot at a championship.
“I really couldn’t see myself playing anywhere else,” Portis said about his own recent contract extension with the Bucks.
The Little Rock native seems excited about starting his second decade in the NBA – and doing it in Milwaukee.
Can the Bucks really contend next season?
The team has changed quite a bit since their 2021 championship run.
Jrue Holiday was traded before the 2023-24 season, and Brook Lopez just left for the Clippers this summer.
The biggest question mark remains Antetokounmpo’s future. He could request a trade at any moment, though Portis seems confident the Greek Freak is staying put.
With their new additions and if they can stay healthy, Portis clearly believes this team has what it takes to make another championship run.
