This summer, the Warriors decided to keep Brandin Podziemski instead of trading for Lauri Markkanen.
Warriors’ Decision and Expectations:
The Warriors chose not to trade for Jazz All-Star Lauri Markkanen because they believe in their second-year guard, Brandin Podziemski. Last season, Podziemski averaged 9.2 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 3.7 assists as a rookie. Now it’s his turn to show why the team has so much faith in him.
In an interview with The Athletic’s Anthony Slater, Podziemski shared what Warriors GM Mike Dunleavy Jr. told him during trade talks with other teams.
“A lot of these other teams are calling about you,” Dunleavy said to him. “They want you, but you’re not going anywhere. You’re ours.” Hearing this made Podziemski feel valued by such a prestigious organization.
Transparency and Trade Talks:
Podziemski appreciated how transparent the Warriors were during their attempts to acquire both Markkanen and Paul George. Insiders revealed that the Clippers wanted both Podziemski and Jonathan Kuminga for George, but Golden State refused.
The label of “untouchable” placed on Podziemski by the team and Joe Lacob’s declaration of him being “a future All-Star” adds pressure on the young player.
Fans think it’s cool that the team is showing such belief in him!
Handling Pressure from Fans:
Despite this support, some fans blame Podziemski for not getting Markkanen due to social media chatter. However, he remains unfazed by these opinions.
“…Now that the trade didn’t go through, people on social media look at it like it’s my fault,” he said about the failed Markkanen trade. But he’s ready to prove himself on the court instead of worrying about online comments.
With Klay Thompson and Chris Paul no longer around, Podziemski is eager to take on more ball-handling duties and playmaking roles.
“I think I’m more than capable of doing that,” he confidently stated about his increased responsibilities.
