The Indiana Fever came back strong after the Olympic break, beating the Phoenix Mercury 98-89.
Caitlin Clark was the star of the game, making history for a rookie player. She scored 29 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, and dished out five assists. This marks her fourth game this season with at least 25 points, five rebounds, and five assistsโbreaking Diana Taurasi’s record for rookies.
Clark’s impressive performance didn’t stop there.
Record-Breaking Night:
On Friday, Clark became the first rookie to surpass 450 points and 200 assists in a season. With totals of 474 points, 218 assists, and 161 rebounds over just 27 games, sheโs setting new standards in the league. No other player has started a season with such numbers.
Fans might think Clark is unstoppable right now.
This game also marked her second time scoring at least 25 points and getting ten assists in one matchโmore than any other WNBA rookie combined. Before the break, she had an amazing game with 24 points and 19 assists. Now she’s the first WNBA player to record over 50 points and at least 25 assists across two games.
Despite all these achievements, Clark showed humility during the final moments of Friday’s contest. With a chance to hit her career-high in points and get her first-ever game with at least thirty points and ten assists, she let the shot clock expire instead of taking another shot.
Afterward, she admitted needing a breather early on due to being away from play for almost a month: “I called for a sub six minutes in,” Clark said via Matthew Byrne of Clutch Points. “I was like holy cowโI need a quick minute here because we were playing fast.”
In essence, while Caitlin Clark is making waves as one of basketballโs future greats she’s still just like everyone elseโhuman.
