Celtics Sign Torrey Craig After Buyout

The Boston Celtics just got stronger, picking up veteran forward Torrey Craig from the buyout market right after Thursday’s trade deadline.

It’s a move that Brad Stevens, the Celtics’ president, had been hinting at. He’d mentioned they’d be signing a veteran wing “relatively soon” – and he wasn’t kidding.

The timing couldn’t be better for the NBA’s top team. Craig brings something they’ve been looking for: playoff experience and reliable three-point shooting.

To make room for Craig, Boston had to do some financial housekeeping first. They shipped Jaden Springer and a 2030 second-round pick to Houston on Wednesday, helping them slash their luxury tax bill from $65.6 million to $50.2 million.

That move opened up two roster spots, making way for Craig to join the team.

Craig’s been sitting out since December 30 with an ankle injury, but he’s almost ready to get back on the court. Before the Bulls waived him this week, the 34-year-old was putting up solid numbers in limited minutes – 6.9 points and 2.8 rebounds per game, while shooting an impressive 42.9% from three-point range.

But here’s what really matters for Boston: Craig’s playoff experience.

He’s played in 75 playoff games since 2018, including 19 starts with Phoenix and Denver. That’s exactly the kind of seasoning the Celtics want for their championship push.

What makes him even more valuable? He’s been deadly accurate from long range, shooting over 39% from three-point territory for the past three seasons.

For Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla, Craig’s another weapon in what’s already one of the NBA’s most dangerous arsenals. Come playoff time, having another sharpshooter could make a real difference – especially in potential matchups against teams like the Cleveland Cavaliers.

It’s the kind of smart, under-the-radar move that could help push Boston over the top in their quest for Banner 18.
