Chicago Sky Midseason Mascot Change

Some teams having a rough season will fire their coaches, but the Chicago Sky fired their mascot.

New Mascot Announcement:

The Chicago Sky decided to replace their old mascot, Sky Guy, with a new one named “Skye the Lioness.” The team shared this news on Twitter:

Why Skye the Lioness?

The team’s record of 11-18 led them to make some changes. They chose Skye the Lioness as their new mascot, inspired by the lion statues at the Art Institute of Chicago. These lions even wore Chicago Sky jerseys during their 2021 championship run.

Farewell to Sky Guy:

Sky Guy, introduced in 2006 as a blue “rocketeer,” had an unusual backstory. He was described as “a masculine guy with a wild imagination and appetite for adventure.” His look included fake muscles, a big jaw, goggles, and a jet pack. According to his bio, he has five older sisters who all play basketball. When they left for college, he played alone and invented a jet pack to combine his love for basketball with adventure.

Honestly, fans think it’s weird that they used such a macho character for a women’s team.

The Team’s Current Situation:

With three losses in a row and barely holding onto the last playoff spot by half-game margin, maybe Skye will bring some much-needed luck. Angel Reese and Chennedy Carter could use some inspiration right now. But don’t worry; Sky Guy isn’t leaving just yet. He’ll be around to mentor Skye until the end of the season.

According to their press release: “Sky Guy will share his experience and support Skye through the remainder of the 2024 season.”
