One of the oldest players in the NBA still believes he has much to offer, but he prefers to join a rebuilding team rather than chase another championship.
Chris Paul’s New Journey
This explains why Chris Paul chose San Antonio this summer. The Spurs had a tough season with a 22-60 record, but they are hopeful for a turnaround led by Victor Wembanyama, the Rookie of the Year.
“I love nothing more than playing and contributing,” Paul said at his introductory press conference with the Spurs. He signed a one-year deal after talking with coach Gregg Popovich.
Chris Paul said playing time was more important to him than chasing a ring when he chose to join the Spurs.

Playing for Coach Popovich
Paul feels honored to play under Popovich. The coach called him “one of the best competitors” and believes Paul will greatly help their young team.
“I’ve admired Pop from afar for years,” Paul shared. “He’s respected not just for his basketball IQ but also as a person and competitor.”
Family Sacrifices
Paul’s family will stay in California while he plays in Texas. “My family is everything,” he said. “My wife is here, my kids are back in L.A., and that’s where they’ll be during the season.” He added that playing makes him happy even if it means being away from them.
Fans think it’s great that Chris values both his family and his passion for basketball.
A Long History with San Antonio
Paul has played against San Antonio more than any other team during his 19-year career, facing them 81 times since 2005. Now at 39, he’s excited to help Wembanyama become a superstar. “I played against [Wembanyama] this season,” he noted, adding that everyone talks about him after games.
New Teammate: Harrison Barnes
Harrison Barnes also joined the Spurs recently after signing an extension deal last summer in Sacramento but was traded as part of their pursuit of DeMar DeRozan.
“It’s funny how things work out with trades,” Barnes said. “But I’m excited to play for Pop and alongside this group.”
