Daniel Gafford just had one of the most incredible games you’ll ever see from a big man in the NBA. The Dallas Mavericks center put up a monster stat line: 31 points while barely missing a shot, 15 rebounds, and seven blocks.
How rare was this performance? Let’s put it in perspective.
He joined some legendary company – only Shaquille O’Neal, Hakeem Olajuwon, and Alonzo Mourning have ever hit those numbers while shooting so efficiently. That’s three Hall of Famers, and now Gafford.
It was also the first time anyone in Mavericks history has reached those marks. At just 26 years old, Gafford set his career-high in points during the performance.
The only downside? Dallas still lost 110-105 to the Charlotte Hornets.
Gafford’s been on an absolute tear lately, stepping up big time while filling in for injured starter Dereck Lively. Over his last three games, he’s averaging 22 points, 11 rebounds, and nearly 4 blocks. Even more impressive? He’s making almost everything he shoots – connecting on 84% of his attempts.
When he’s gotten the chance to start this season, Gafford’s made the most of it. In 17 starts, he’s putting up 15 points and 7 rebounds per game while shooting a ridiculous 73% from the field.
The timing couldn’t be better for Gafford to show what he can do. Just days ago, reports surfaced that the Mavericks have been floating his name in trade talks, looking to add some perimeter defense.
It’s worth remembering that Dallas acquired Gafford just last year from the Washington Wizards. He turned out to be a key piece in their surprise run to the NBA Finals.
With performances like this, the Mavs’ front office might want to think twice about letting him go. Finding centers who can dominate on both ends of the floor isn’t easy – and Gafford’s showing he can be that guy.
