The Dallas Mavericks just hit the basketball lottery – literally. Despite having only a 1.8% chance to win the NBA draft lottery, they landed the top pick and selected Duke star Cooper Flagg, the consensus number one choice that nobody was surprised to see go first.
Flagg isn’t just another top draft pick. At just 18 years old, he’s being called a “generational talent” by scouts across the league.
And his bank account might end up being just as impressive as his game.
According to projections from Spotrac, Flagg could earn a mind-blowing $930 million in NBA contracts by the time he turns 31. That would shatter records for North American sports earnings.

The Billion-Dollar Basketball Player?
Flagg’s rookie deal with Dallas is worth $62.7 million over four years – pretty standard for a top NBA pick.
But here’s where things get crazy.
If Flagg performs well enough to make an All-NBA team, win MVP, or grab Defensive Player of the Year honors, he’ll qualify for a 30% supermax extension on his second contract. That would be worth about $359 million from 2029-2033.
Then comes the really big money.
Meeting those same criteria again would unlock a 35% supermax for his third contract – a staggering $509 million deal running through 2038.
All told, that’s $930 million in on-court earnings before he even hits his mid-30s.
For comparison, LeBron James – arguably the greatest player ever – has earned roughly $528.6 million over his entire legendary career. Flagg could potentially make $400 million more than that.
The young star is already familiar with big paydays, having earned millions through NIL deals during his time at Duke.
Basketball insiders are calling Flagg the most hyped American prospect since LeBron entered the league back in 2003. The pressure will be enormous, but so is the potential reward.
