Dennis Schroder Becomes First International Star To Sign For 10th NBA Team

Kings Land Schroder in Three-Year, $45 Million Deal to Fill Point Guard Void

The Kings wasted no time addressing their biggest offseason need. Just hours after free agency opened, Sacramento secured veteran point guard Dennis Schroder on a three-year, $45 million contract from the Detroit Pistons.

Ever since trading De’Aaron Fox midway through last season, the Kings have struggled to find consistency at the point guard position.

Schroder, 31, immediately fills that gap.

“I want to stay in Detroit for sure, but Detroit ain’t waiting for me, I can tell you that much,” Schroder had said just days before the deal was announced.

The German guard averaged 10.8 points, 2.6 rebounds and 5.6 assists in 25.2 minutes per game after joining Detroit last season. He stepped up his performance in the playoffs against the Knicks, putting up 12.5 points and 3.7 assists while adding 1.2 steals per game.

Sacramento views this as a major win for their roster construction. They managed to add Schroder while also keeping Malik Monk, despite rumors suggesting Monk might be used as trade bait during negotiations.

ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that the Kings had also considered Russell Westbrook for the position before ultimately choosing Schroder.

With this move, Schroder makes NBA history. Sacramento becomes his 10th different NBA team in just 12 years in the league, making him the international player who has played for the most franchises in NBA history. He breaks his tie with Marco Belinelli for that unique distinction.

The Kings believe Schroder’s playmaking and experience will complement their core as they look to return to playoff contention next season.
