Rick Fox Jumps From NBA Courts to Bahamian Politics
Former Lakers star Rick Fox is making a big move off the court. The three-time NBA champion announced Monday he’s running for a legislative seat in the Bahamas in next year’s election, sharing the news with supporters on Facebook.
“You’ve shared that you want more transparency, a modern economy that prioritizes affordability and security, and a country where opportunity is our reality, not just a promise,” Fox wrote to voters.
His political bid comes at a tough time for the island nation.
The Bahamas is struggling with several major problems right now. Corruption scandals have left many citizens concerned about their government. There’s also growing tension over illegal immigration as more people arrive on the islands without documentation.
And the country is still rebuilding from Hurricane Dorian.
The massive Category 5 storm that hit in September 2019 remains one of the worst disasters the Bahamas has ever faced.
Fox’s campaign promises to focus on accountability and economic stability – issues that resonate deeply with many Bahamians looking for change.
From Championship Rings to Campaign Trail
Most fans know Fox from his impressive NBA career. He spent seven seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers, helping them win three straight championships from 2000 to 2002 alongside Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal.
Before joining the Lakers, he played six seasons with the Boston Celtics, who drafted him 24th overall in 1991.
But Fox didn’t just disappear after basketball.
In 2015, he co-founded Echo Fox, diving into the booming esports industry. The organization secured a coveted spot in the North America League of Legends Championship Series – basically the NBA of competitive gaming. Though he’s since left the company, he’s still well-known in gaming circles.
Bahamian Roots Run Deep
Despite being born in Toronto to a Canadian mom and Bahamian dad, Fox’s connection to the Bahamas runs deep. He grew up on the islands and has always spoken proudly about his Bahamian heritage.
Now he’s returning to his roots with a clear message: the Bahamas needs security, affordability, and real opportunity for its people.
For Fox, this campaign isn’t just about winning a seat – it’s about bringing meaningful change to a country he calls home.
