The Orlando Magic have found a way to keep winning without Paolo Banchero by letting the Wagner brothers take charge.
Franz Wagner Shines in LA:
Franz Wagner had an incredible game against the Los Angeles Lakers, scoring 37 points and hitting a crucial step-back three-pointer to secure a 119-118 victory. He also contributed 11 assists and four steals, making him the youngest forward since LeBron James in 2007 to achieve such stats with at least 35 points and 10 assists.

Stepping Up After Banchero’s Injury:
After losing their star Banchero due to a torn oblique on October 30, the Magic initially struggled, dropping four games. But then they bounced back with seven wins out of eight games, thanks largely to Franz and Moritz Wagner. Moritz added valuable support from the bench with 19 points, five rebounds, and four assists. The brothers have been key players for the team this November.

The Brothers’ Impact:
With Banchero sidelined, Franz has taken control of the offense, boosting his averages significantly from October to November. He’s now putting up impressive numbers—25.4 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 6.3 assists per game—while Moritz is contributing as well with over 13 points per game despite limited minutes.

Past Success and Current Challenges:
The Wagners aren’t new to success; they helped Germany win gold at the FIBA World Cup in 2023 by combining for significant contributions in the final match against Serbia. Now they’re helping Orlando thrive even without other key players like Wendell Carter Jr. and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope.
One area where they really excel is free throw shooting: Franz hits an impressive 86% while Moritz makes about 81%. This skill stood out especially against the Lakers when Anthony Davis missed crucial free throws late in the game .
Looking Ahead:
Franz has improved his shooting this season too; he’s now making threes at a much better rate than last year. His performance was crucial down the stretch against LA as he scored important points late in that matchup.
Banchero hopes to return around Christmas time, which could be perfect timing for Orlando if Franz continues proving he can lead offensively alongside his brother during this period of adversity. It seems like two Wagners might just be enough for now!
