Golden State Warriors Eyeing Big Moves for 2027
The Warriors bounced back last season with a 48-34 record, though they had to fight through the play-in tournament to secure the 7th seed. They showed some playoff magic by taking down the Rockets in a thrilling seven-game series.
But Minnesota proved too much to handle, ending Golden State’s run in just five games in the conference semifinals.
Now, according to NBA insider Sam Amick, the Warriors have a long-term plan brewing. They’re keeping their financial options open through the 2026-27 season with one clear goal: landing a superstar in the 2027 offseason.
Let’s look at who might be on their radar.
The Warriors’ 2027 Free Agency Targets
Donovan Mitchell could be at the top of their list. The Cavs star is playing on a three-year, $150 million max extension, making $46.4 million next season at age 29.
Mitchell has established himself as an elite two-way player in Cleveland.
The key detail? His contract includes a massive $58.3 million player option for 2027-28. If things don’t go well in Cleveland over the next two seasons, Mitchell might be looking for a new home – and Golden State will be watching closely.
Giannis Antetokounmpo is another potential target. The Greek Freak is on a similar timeline with his three-year, $175 million deal with Milwaukee.
He’s set to earn $54 million in 2025-26, with a $62.7 million player option for 2027-28.
Rumors about Giannis possibly leaving the Bucks have circulated for years. The Warriors would surely jump at the chance to bring the two-time MVP to the Bay Area.
Nikola Jokic might be the biggest fish of all. Widely considered the best player in the world right now, the Denver center is heading into his 11th season on a massive five-year, $276 million contract.
The three-time MVP will make $55 million next season at age 30.
Like the others, Jokic has a player option for 2027-28 worth $62.8 million. While it’s hard to imagine him leaving Denver, the NBA landscape can change quickly. The Warriors would need to break the bank, but for a player of Jokic’s caliber, they’d likely do whatever it takes.
Karl-Anthony Towns rounds out the potential targets. The Knicks acquired the all-star center from Minnesota before last season, and he started 72 games for New York.
Towns is playing on a four-year, $220 million extension.
Following the pattern of the other stars, Towns also has a player option for 2027-28. If he declines it, he’d become an unrestricted free agent – giving Golden State their shot.
The Warriors’ strategy is clear: maintain flexibility and be ready to pounce when these superstars potentially hit the market in 2027. It’s a patient approach, but one that could lead to another championship window in the Bay.
