The Heat are determined to keep Jimmy Butler for another year despite rumors of a 2025 offseason breakup.
Barry Jackson from the Miami Herald reports that the team has no plans to trade Butler, even though he could leave as a free agent next summer. “Butler originally wanted an extension from the Heat this summer, but then changed his mind after Miami did not offer one,” Jackson wrote. “He now intends to play out this season and not sign an extension with any team and will become a free agent in the summer of 2025. The Heat is not shopping Butler, according to a source.”
The Heat are taking a risk by holding onto Butler instead of trading him for valuable assets that could benefit players like Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro . The team’s current roster isn’t strong enough to compete in an improved Eastern Conference. Teams like the Knicks, Sixers, Magic, Bucks, and Celtics have all made significant upgrades or are expected to perform better.
Fans might think it’s risky for both sides.
Heat’s Gamble
Miami’s decision to keep Butler means they believe he can still lead them deep into the playoffs. However, if they don’t trade him now, they risk losing him for nothing next year. On the flip side, Butler is also taking a chance by betting on himself as a free agent next year rather than pushing for a trade now. At 35 years old in September and with recent injury history missing 65 games over three years, his value might decline.
Pat Riley questioned Butler’s endurance earlier this year when explaining why they didn’t offer him an extension. Many thought that meant they’d move on from him soon after those comments. Instead, they’re hoping he can deliver another magical season and lead them back to the NBA Finals.
What do you think? Should they keep or trade him?
