Charles Lee is stepping into his role as an NBA head coach for the first time, having previously been a key assistant with both the Boston Celtics and Milwaukee Bucks, where he contributed to championship-winning teams. Now he’s taking charge of the Charlotte Hornets.
Preseason Victory
The Hornets recently snagged their first preseason win against the Miami Heat, edging them out 111-108 after a narrow loss to the New York Knicks. Lee emphasized a shift in mindset and teamwork during this game. โI think that it was a mindset shift,” he explained. “…I also just really thought that everyone chipped in. Everybody did their job in the second half.”
Changing Perceptions
In past seasons, many viewed the Hornets as lacking competitive spirit, often predicting losses before games even began. However, those perceptions might be changing under Lee’s leadership. He expects his players to bring intensity and aims for them to compete for playoff spots soon.
Against Miami, LaMelo Ball, Miles Bridges, Tre Mann, and Tidjane Salaun all scored double digits. Despite Grant Williams being sidelined with an injury, Charlotte showed potential for surprising performances this season.
Fans love seeing such energy from their team; it’s refreshing!
Lee noted after a recent loss to New York that despite losing statistical battles like field goals and turnovers, they only lost by two pointsโshowing competitive grit.
Future Prospects
Lee seems perfectly suited for his new role; Charlotte’s management appears ready to give him time to develop young talent effectively. The Hornets could become quite bothersome for other Eastern Conference teams if they maintain this toughness throughout the season.
If health remains on their side , making it into postseason play isn’t far-fetchedโand that should make some rivals nervous!
