Hornets Grant Williams & Josh Green to Miss Training Camp Due to Injury

The Hornets will start training camp without Williams and Green

The Charlotte Hornets are looking to bounce back after a brutal 2024-25 season where they finished with a 19-63 record – the third-worst in the NBA and second-worst in the Eastern Conference.

But they’ll face an immediate challenge when training camp opens next week.

Two key veterans won’t be available as the team begins preparations for the new season. Grant Williams and Josh Green are both sidelined with injuries, and head coach Charles Lee says there’s no timeline for their return.

Williams is still recovering from an ACL and meniscus tear he suffered in November 2024, while Green is rehabbing from shoulder surgery he underwent just three months ago in June.

The timing couldn’t be worse for a team desperate to show improvement.

Lee mentioned that Williams is further along in his recovery process than Green, which makes sense given the different timelines of their injuries. Williams has had about 10 months to recover, while Green is only three months post-surgery.

Williams, 26, came to Charlotte at the 2023-24 trade deadline from Dallas. He’s played in 45 games for the Hornets, making 17 starts during his time with the team. Last season, he appeared in just 16 games before the devastating knee injury cut his season short.

His absence is particularly concerning because he’s one of the few true frontcourt players on the roster.

Green, 24, joined the Hornets before last season as part of a massive six-team trade. He quickly became a regular starter, opening 67 of his 68 games while averaging 7.4 points, 2.5 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 1.1 steals per game.

The Hornets’ frontcourt depth took another hit this offseason when they traded big man Mark Williams to the Phoenix Suns.

There is some good news, though. Brandon Miller, who played just 27 games last season, is expected to be at full health. The talented young wing should help bolster the frontcourt rotation.

Charlotte opens their season on Wednesday, October 22, against the Brooklyn Nets. Whether they’ll have Williams or Green available by then remains to be seen.

The bigger question: Can this injury-plagued team finally take a step forward and compete for a playoff spot in the East?
