Now we can understand what makes Jalen Williams such a special athlete. The Thunder star had never even tasted alcohol before promising teammates he’d finally take a drink if they won a championship together.
Well, that promise was put to the test when Oklahoma City captured their first-ever NBA title.
The 24-year-old forward admitted during Monday’s Fadeaway World interview that his first drinking experience during the team’s championship celebrations was “a blur.”
“Actually just had my first drink, so I’m like working on that,” Williams shared in his postgame interview, looking tired but still amused by all the excitement.
His verdict on alcohol? Not great.
“I drank a little bit, took a couple shots, champagne, I had beer, it was all disgusting. Ima stick to Shirley Temples,” he confessed.
The Thunder’s celebrations were notably restrained compared to other championship teams. NBA insider Marcus Thompson II wrote in The Athletic that it was “the most tempered locker room I’ve seen after any championship.”
While Shai Gilgeous-Alexander collected an impressive trophy haul this season – league MVP, Finals MVP, and scoring champion – he made sure to share the spotlight with his co-star.
Williams earned his first All-Star selection this year and played a crucial role in the team’s championship run.
“Jalen Williams is a once in a lifetime player,” SGA declared during the ESPN broadcast. “Without him, without his performances, without his big-time moments, with all his big-time shotmaking and defending, everything he brings to this team – we don’t win this championship.”
In a touching moment, the 26-year-old Gilgeous-Alexander even shared his MVP honor with Williams.
“This is just as much my MVP as it is his. We’ll share this one for a very long time,” he said before giving Williams a strong hug in front of the cheering Paycom Center crowd.
