The father of Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown has been accused of attempted murder following a stabbing incident in Las Vegas.
Marselles Brown, 57, was arrested Thursday morning after allegedly stabbing a youth football coach multiple times during a parking lot dispute.
The incident happened Wednesday night near All American Park when Brown reportedly dinged another car while getting out of his SUV.
According to police reports, the victim, Cross Tupuola, got out to check the damage, but Brown dismissed it as “simply a bump” before calling him a “b – ch ass” and walking away.
Things quickly escalated from there.
Brown, a former boxer who stands 7 feet tall and weighs 300 pounds, allegedly grabbed Tupuola from behind and stabbed him repeatedly in the abdomen.
Tupuola’s girlfriend told police that her boyfriend initially tried to fight back before attempting to flee, with Brown reportedly chasing after him. The couple managed to get back to their car and drive away to call 911.
The injuries were severe. Tupuola suffered multiple stab wounds including one to his upper chest, a defensive wound on his hand that damaged tendons, and internal injuries that required partial removal of his digestive system. He also had a broken rib that might need surgery.
Tupuola is now recovering from surgery at a local hospital.
Brown also received medical treatment for minor injuries including a broken toe, scraped knees, and a facial abrasion.
His attorney claims the stabbing was in self-defense, stating that Tupuola attacked Brown first.
The former boxer made his first court appearance Thursday afternoon, where his bail was set at $300,000. He’s scheduled to return to court on Tuesday, August 26.
Marselles Brown had a boxing career spanning several decades. He debuted in 1989 and compiled a 33-18-1 record with 25 knockouts before retiring about ten years ago.
According to TMZ Sports, Jaylen Brown “doesn’t have a close relationship with his father and was unaware of the arrest or incident.”
The younger Brown has become one of the NBA’s brightest stars since being drafted third overall by the Celtics in 2016. He was named Finals MVP during Boston’s championship run and is a four-time All-Star.
This past season, Jaylen averaged 22.2 points per game as the Celtics failed to defend their title, losing to the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference semifinals.
