The Nets have started rebuilding by trading Mikal Bridges to the Knicks.
Nets’ Future Plans
This summer, the Nets decided to trade their top player, Mikal Bridges, signaling a rebuild. But they might quickly bounce back if they land Jimmy Butler next year. Brian Lewis from the New York Post says Butler “likes” Brooklyn as a potential free-agent destination if he doesnโt extend his contract with the Heat. Butler has a $52.4 million player option for 2025-26 but is expected to decline it for a new long-term deal.
“The odds of him picking up his player option are slim unless he agrees to a max deal with the Heat beforehand,” Lewis wrote. “The six-time All-Star is the most accomplished standout on that [free agent] list not named [LeBron] James, and he likes Brooklyn, according to sources close to the player.”
Heat’s Reluctance
The Heat aren’t keen on offering max money to Butler, who missed 65 games over three seasons. At his season-ending press conference, Pat Riley was clear about his doubts regarding Butlerโs availability and endurance. Rileyโs comments suggested Miami might trade Butler rather than lose him for nothing next year.
However, Barry Jackson from the Miami Herald reported in July that “the Heat is not shopping Butler” and plans to keep him through the 2024-25 season before making any decisions next summer.
Butler’s Determination
Butler seems set on proving himself worthy of another big contract. Heโs been seen playing at various Pro-Am events this summer and even took part in Yao Ming’s charity event in China last week (https://x.com/HoHighlights/status/1825953196722012306). Last season, he averaged 20.8 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 5.0 assists.
