Jimmy Butler’s push to leave the Miami Heat is getting expensive. The star forward has already lost $3.1 million in salary from two team suspensions – including his latest two-game ban for missing a team flight.
That’s a pretty big hit to the wallet, even for an NBA star.
His first suspension, lasting seven games, cost him $346,543 per game – adding up to $2.35 million. That’s about 1/145 of his $48.8 million salary this season.
But there might be some good news for Butler’s bank account. The Miami Herald’s Anthony Chiang reports he could get some or most of that money back, depending on how his union grievances play out.
Butler’s not exactly being subtle about wanting out of Miami. He’s even started wearing Phoenix Suns-colored shoes during games, right as trade rumors heat up linking him to Phoenix.
The numbers tell the story of a player clearly trying to force a move. Since January 1st:
– He’s shooting 16% less often than before
– Passing the ball more frequently (up to 76% of touches from 70%)
– Getting into the paint much less (down to 26% from 37%)
Money isn’t really the issue here. Butler’s already earned $312 million in his career, and he’s got a massive $52.4 million player option waiting for him in 2025-26.
He’s made his feelings crystal clear to team management. According to NBA insider Shams Charania, Butler personally told both team president Pat Riley and owner Micky Arison he wants out.
The Heat have reportedly had some “productive conversations” about potential trades this week. With the trade deadline coming up on February 6th, we’ll soon see if Butler gets his wish.
The timing’s interesting – Butler wore those Suns shoes the same night Phoenix made a big move, trading their 2031 first-round pick to Utah for three earlier first-rounders. That’s the kind of deal that could help them put together a package for someone like Butler.
The clock’s ticking. The Heat have until 3 p.m. ET on February 6th to make a move, or they might be stuck with an unhappy superstar for the rest of the season.
