Kevin Durant Trade Rumors: Suns Superstar Linked To Raptors

Phoenix Suns star Kevin Durant linked to surprise Eastern Conference team

Kevin Durant could be heading north of the border. NBA insider Marc Stein reports that the Toronto Raptors might make a play for the Suns forward if they can’t land their top target, Giannis Antetokounmpo.

“Toronto has likewise been painted by numerous NBA figures as a potential trade suitor for Durant … particularly if Antetokounmpo doesn’t reach the open market,” Stein wrote.

The Raptors actually have a decent shot at putting together a package for Durant compared to what it would take to get Giannis.

Stein added: “The Greek Freak also happens to be six years younger than Durant, is still playing at an MVP level and, most crucially, has two more guaranteed years left on his contract.”

Durant’s still got it at 36

Durant put up impressive numbers this season, averaging 26.6 points per game while shooting a red-hot 52.7% from the field and 43% from beyond the arc.

He also contributed 6 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game.

The 15-time All-Star has two NBA championships under his belt and remains one of the league’s elite scorers.

He’s under contract through 2025-26, which gives the Raptors a guaranteed window with the superstar if they make a move.

Why Toronto makes sense

The Raptors have missed the playoffs three straight years and desperately need star power.

They’ve already started building by trading for Brandon Ingram in February. Adding Durant to a core with Scottie Barnes and Immanuel Quickley could instantly make them relevant in the East again.

Durant becomes eligible for a massive two-year, $124 million extension right after the NBA Finals end. His current deal includes about $6.27 million in incentives.

Suns facing financial nightmare

The Suns are in a tough spot financially. ESPN’s Bobby Marks reports they’re projected to be $25 million over the second apron next season, making them a luxury tax team for the fourth straight year.

If they keep their current roster, Phoenix is looking at a staggering $450 million in combined salary and tax penalties.

That’s simply not sustainable.

Trading Durant would help kickstart a much-needed rebuild and give the Suns financial flexibility they desperately need.

The Suns face several restrictions until June 30, including limitations on aggregating contracts in trades and buying second-round picks on draft night.

They do have the second round and veterans minimum exception available, but can’t use the two trade exceptions ($3.2 million and $2.8 million) created during the regular season.
