The Knicks are eyeing Ben Simmons for their final roster spot, sources say.
New York has “continued to show strong interest” in signing the former All-Star as teams await his decision, according to SNY’s Ian Begley. The Knicks also have Landry Shamet on their radar for that last veteran minimum contract.
Simmons isn’t the only team interested in the 29-year-old’s services.
“League sources say that the Suns have also had some recent dialogue with former All-Star Ben Simmons, who I’m told has drawn interest since free agency began from Boston, New York, and Sacramento,” NBA insider Marc Stein reported in late July.
The Celtics currently lead the pack as favorites to land Simmons, with BetUS Sportsbook giving them +185 odds. Phoenix (+255) and New York (+375) aren’t far behind.
It’s been quite a journey for the former No. 1 pick.
The 76ers selected Simmons first overall in 2016, but he missed his entire rookie season with a foot injury. When he finally hit the court in 2017-18, he made an immediate impact, winning Rookie of the Year honors.
During his prime Philly years, Simmons racked up three All-Star selections and made the All-Defensive team twice.
Then things got complicated.
His career took a nosedive due to injuries and a messy contract standoff with the 76ers. He sat out the entire 2021-22 season and has only played in 98 games over the past three years.
Last season, Simmons split time between Brooklyn and the Clippers, appearing in 51 games (24 starts). His numbers were a far cry from his All-Star days: just 5.0 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 5.6 assists in 22 minutes per game.
The playoffs were even rougher. Despite his impressive 6-foot-10 frame and natural athleticism, Simmons managed only four total points across five postseason games with LA.
The Knicks might see Simmons as a way to add frontcourt depth, though his lack of shooting range remains a concern. What he can still bring to the table is solid defensive skills.
Simmons is coming off a massive payday – the final season of a five-year, $170 million max extension he signed with Philadelphia back in 2019. He’s now represented by agent Bernie Lee and looking for his next opportunity.
For a veteran minimum deal, could the former All-Star be worth the gamble for New York?
