Kristaps Porzingis might finally return Friday against Heat
The Celtics’ big man could be back on the court Friday night when Boston faces Miami, as Porzingis is now listed as questionable after missing seven straight games with a mysterious illness.
Porzingis has been sidelined since February 26th with what he described as a “viral illness” that team doctors haven’t been able to fully identify yet.
The 7-footer seems eager to get back to action. He even told a fan on social media that he wanted to play against the Lakers last Saturday, but after participating in shootaround, he was ultimately ruled out.
It looks like the decision isn’t entirely up to him, with team medical staff apparently taking a cautious approach.
“I’m recovering and getting better,” Porzingis said about his condition.
The upgrade to questionable status for tonight’s matchup with the Heat is definitely a positive sign after his two-week absence.
ESPN’s Shams Charania reported Wednesday that Boston is handling the situation “day-to-day” and team officials “don’t quite know” exactly when their star center will return.
The Celtics might be seriously shorthanded in Miami tonight. Jayson Tatum (knee tendinopathy), Jaylen Brown (right knee impingement), and Derrick White (left knee contusion) are all on the injury report alongside Porzingis.
Despite these concerns, oddsmakers have Boston as eight-point favorites to beat Miami and complete a 3-0 season sweep of their conference rivals.
## When healthy, Porzingis has been a game-changer
The 29-year-old Latvian has been terrific when available this season, averaging 18.9 points, 6.8 rebounds and 1.6 blocks per game.
His outside shooting has been particularly impressive. Porzingis is connecting on a career-best 40.3% of his three-pointers, making him one of the league’s most dangerous stretch big men.
Unfortunately, staying on the court has been a challenge since joining Boston. Injuries have been a constant issue, with Porzingis missing most of the Celtics’ championship run last season due to calf and ankle problems.
A rare tendon injury in his ankle required offseason surgery and forced him to sit out the first month of this season.
The Celtics have managed well without him so far, but getting Porzingis back healthy for the playoff push would be huge for their chances to repeat as champions.
