Lauri Markkanen Wants to Stay in Utah Despite Warriors Interest

Ever since the offseason began, Lauri Markkanen has been a hot topic for trade rumors.

Markkanen’s Future in Utah:

Tony Jones from The Athletic spoke on ESPN 700’s The Drive with Spence Checketts. He shared that Markkanen is likely to sign a contract extension after August 6, making him ineligible for trades this year. "I would expect him to sign on August 7th, or after August 6th," Tony said. "Lauri doesnโ€™t want to be traded."

If he signs the new deal on August 6, he can’t be traded until February 6. But if he waits until the 7th or later, Utah can’t trade him until summer 2025.

Interest from Golden State:

Golden State has shown interest in Markkanen, offering a chance to join a title-contending team. However, Tony believes Lauri wants to stay in Utah and help rebuild the team. "Lauri has really taken to Utah," Tony explained. "His family loves it here too."

Fans think it’s great he’s committed to his current team.

Despite missing playoffs for two years and possibly another tough season ahead, Utah sees Lauri as their future star. They hope to build around him and aim high in the 2025 draft.

Comparisons with Other Players:

Moving to Golden State could boost his chances of winning a title while Steph Curry is still playing. This is why players like Buddy Hield joined the Warriors recently.

"Hield chose the Warriors because of the opportunity to win," reported The Athletic. His other options included Detroit Pistons and Lakers.
