Magic sign star forward to five-year max extension

The Magic have decided to give Franz Wagner a big contract extension.

Starting in the 2025/26 season, Wagner’s new deal will kick in. If he wins MVP, Defensive Player of the Year, or makes an All-NBA team next year, he could earn even more money. With the salary cap expected to rise by 10% that year, his total earnings could reach up to $269 million over five years.

Wagner has been a key player for Orlando since being picked 8th overall in the 2021 draft. In the last season alone, he had career highs with averages of 19.7 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game .

Contract Details:

The new contract includes special terms known as “Rose rule language.” This means if Wagner achieves certain awards or honors next season, his salary will be higher than originally planned. Fans are likely excited about this news because it shows trust in Wagner’s potential.

Wagner has also been very reliable on the court, missing only 15 games out of a possible 246 regular-season matchups so far. He recently helped Germany win gold at the World Cup and is looking forward to possibly playing in the Olympics next summer.

This summer has seen other rookies getting big deals too. Scottie Barnes from the Raptors agreed to a similar five-year max extension featuring Rose rule language. Pistons guard Cade Cunningham is also expected to finalize his own max extension soon.

Next season will see Wagner earning just over $7 million before his new contract begins.
