NBA Draft 2025: Spurs Explore Trading 14th Pick

The Spurs are eyeing big moves with their draft picks, possibly targeting superstars like Giannis Antetokounmpo and Kevin Durant. They currently hold the No. 2 and No. 14 picks in the first round of the 2025 NBA draft.

Sources say San Antonio is actively exploring ways to package their 14th pick with a player to upgrade their roster, according to Kevin O’Connor of Yahoo Sports.

The team is expected to use their No. 2 pick on Rutgers star Dylan Harper, adding another young talent to a squad that already features the last two NBA Rookie of the Year winners – Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle.

But the Spurs might have bigger plans.

“Whether that upgrade is marginal or massive depends on who shakes loose, but it’s clear San Antonio isn’t waiting around,” O’Connor reported. “So if Giannis actually is available, maybe San Antonio’s willing to put Harper on the table.”

The Spurs are loaded with draft capital. They have six first-round picks over the next eight years, multiple years of pick swaps, and a whopping 17 second-round picks.

Even after sending four first-rounders to acquire De’Aaron Fox at the trade deadline, they still have plenty of assets to work with.

Fox could be a key part of their future plans. He’s eligible to sign a four-year, $229 million maximum extension beginning August 3.

The team already has 10 players under contract for next season.

According to ESPN’s Bobby Marks, the Spurs will also have access to their $14.1 million non-tax and $5.1 million biannual exceptions, giving them more flexibility to improve the roster.

Their draft assets go beyond just this year. San Antonio has the right to swap first-round picks with Atlanta in 2026 and owns the Hawks’ unprotected first-rounder in 2027.

They can trade three additional first-round picks through 2032, including both of their first-rounders in this year’s draft.

The team also holds rights to swap first-round picks with Boston (top-1 protected) in 2028, and with either Dallas or Minnesota in 2030.

There’s one complication, though. The Spurs currently have $143 million in salary commitments and will be over the cap once they factor in both of their first-round picks this year.
