Brandon Ingram Fined $25,000 After Water Bottle Incident in Philly
The NBA slapped Toronto Raptors forward Brandon Ingram with a $25,000 fine on Monday for throwing his water bottle during Friday’s game against the Philadelphia 76ers. The incident happened midway through the third quarter at Philly’s Xfinity Mobile Arena.
Ingram lost his cool after fouling Trendon Watford on a driving layup.
When Watford completed the basket despite the contact, Ingram stormed to the bench, sat down, and hurled his water bottle in frustration. The bottle hit a game attendant and created a mess that delayed the game while staff dried the court.
You can see the whole thing unfold in this video:
The refs immediately hit Ingram with a technical foul. Tyrese Maxey stepped up and sank the free throw, while Watford added his own to complete the three-point play.
This sequence gave the Sixers even more momentum in a game they were already controlling.
Watford went on to have the game of his life, posting his first career triple-double with 20 points, 17 rebounds, and 10 assists as Philly cruised to a 130-120 win.
Despite the drama, Ingram actually played pretty well. He put up 21 points, grabbed 8 rebounds, and dished out 5 assists in an efficient performance. But his sideline tantrum completely overshadowed his solid stat line.
The loss dropped Toronto to a disappointing 3-6 record to start the season.
Philadelphia, meanwhile, looks like a real threat in the East at 7-2.
Both teams are back in action Tuesday night. The Raptors will try to right the ship against the Brooklyn Nets at Barclays Center, while the 76ers host the Boston Celtics in a nationally televised showdown on NBC at 8 p.m. ET.
This fine is just the latest example of how the NBA isn’t messing around when it comes to keeping games professional and safe – no matter how frustrated players might get.
