NBA mourns the loss of Oliver Miller at 54
The basketball world is in shock following the death of former NBA player Oliver Miller, who passed away at just 54 years old.
Miller, nicknamed “Big O,” was the 22nd overall pick in the 1992 NBA draft and spent nine seasons in the league.
He made his biggest mark with the Phoenix Suns, who drafted him, and later with the Toronto Raptors during their first-ever season. The timing is especially poignant as the Raptors celebrate their 30th anniversary this year.
Miller’s career peaked during the 1995-96 season with Toronto, when he put up impressive numbers across the board – nearly 13 points, over 7 rebounds, and almost 2 blocks per game.
The Raptors organization shared their grief on social media: “He holds a special place in our history as a member of our inaugural team in 1995, and we are so grateful for all his contributions. We send our deepest condolences…”
## Teammates remember “Big O”
Former Sun turned commentator Eddie Johnson broke the news on X.
“I am so sad to report we have lost another NBA Fraternity member! Nine year veteran Oliver Miller has passed away at age 54! Going to miss you Big O. . RIP,” Johnson wrote.
Corie Blount, who played alongside Miller in Phoenix, shared a heartfelt tribute.
“I find it difficult to express the extent of the friendship that developed between Big O and myself,” Blount posted. “During our time together with the Suns, we built a strong bond rooted in mutual respect. We shared many memorable moments and laughter.”
The Phoenix Suns also honored their former player with a simple but touching message: “Rest in Peace, Big O ”
Miller’s passing leaves a hole in the basketball community, particularly among those who remember the early days of the Raptors franchise and the Suns teams of the mid-90s.
