Cam Thomas Out 3-4 Weeks with Hamstring Strain
Brooklyn Nets guard Cam Thomas will miss at least three to four weeks with a left hamstring strain, the team announced Friday.
The injury happened during the first quarter of Wednesday’s game against the Indiana Pacers – a rare bright spot in Brooklyn’s season as they secured their first win, 112-103.
Thomas hurt himself after taking a jump shot. While he managed to walk off the court on his own, he didn’t return to the game.
This is the same hamstring that gave Thomas trouble last season.
“It’s way different. It’s not as bad as the last one, I’ll say that. I dodged a bullet with that,” Thomas told reporters Friday.
The 24-year-old shooting guard has a history with this particular injury. He strained his left hamstring three separate times last season, limiting him to just 25 games.
Despite the setback, Thomas isn’t too worried.
“It’s obviously frustrating being hurt with anything, whether it’s an ankle, foot, whatever the case may be,” he said before Brooklyn’s 125-107 loss to Detroit in Emirates NBA Cup Group Play. “Nobody wants to be injured, sitting off to the side.”
“I’m not really concerned about it. I’ll be back in no time.”
Thomas plans to be cautious with his recovery this time around.
“Good thing it happened earlier this year,” he added. “I’m going to make sure I’m fully healed. Whenever I am out that means I am 100% to go.”
Rookie Steps Up
Rookie Egor Denim, the No. 8 overall pick in June’s draft, started in Thomas’s place against Detroit.
Nets coach Jordi Fernandez acknowledged the challenge of replacing Thomas’s production.
“We don’t have another Cam Thomas,” Fernandez said. “The constant has to be that we play hard with purpose. We have to look like a competitive team out there, a selfless team, and a connected team. If that happens, we’ll be OK.”
Thomas was averaging 24 points per game last season before injuries derailed his campaign.
His absence is a significant blow to a Nets team that’s struggled mightily to start the season.
Contract Situation
Thomas signed his $6 million qualifying offer over the summer after entering restricted free agency. The move makes him an unrestricted free agent in 2026, giving him complete control over his next destination.
The guard was selected 21st overall by the Nets in the 2021 NBA draft after playing college ball at LSU.
In his four seasons with Brooklyn, Thomas has averaged 15.4 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.1 assists across 223 games. He’s shot 43.8% from the field and 34.6% from three-point range.
The Nets (1-8) will try to bounce back from Friday’s loss when they face the New York Knicks on Sunday.
