Pelicans Executive VP Joe Dumars Demands No-Excuses Mindset

Joe Dumars Returns Home to Lead Pelicans After Disappointing Season

The Pelicans have officially brought in Joe Dumars as their new executive vice president, hoping he can turn things around after a rough 2024-25 season. The Naismith Hall of Famer couldn’t hide his excitement about returning to his home state of Louisiana, calling it a "full circle moment" in his career.

New Orleans made the announcement Wednesday. Dumars, who won championships both as a player and executive with the Pistons, will take over for David Griffin as head of basketball operations.

"As a Louisiana native, this is truly a full circle moment," Dumars said. "I grew up as a Saints fan and the first AAU basketball team I played on at 16 years old was based in New Orleans, so this opportunity is very special to me on a personal level."

He’s ready to make an impact right away.

"I look forward to being a part of the Pelicans organization, and building a team that proudly represents our fans on the court and in our community."

The 61-year-old comes to New Orleans after serving as the NBA league office’s executive vice president of basketball operations since 2022. Before that, he spent three years as the Sacramento Kings‘ chief strategy officer.

Pelicans governor Gayle is thrilled with the hire.

"I have a great deal of respect for what Joe has already accomplished as a player and executive, but more importantly I admire his character and leadership," she said. "His vast experience and relationships throughout the NBA, along with his strong leadership qualities, will have a tremendous impact."

Dumars jumped straight into executive work after hanging up his sneakers. He ran Detroit’s front office from 2000 to 2014, where he built the 2004 championship team.

During his tenure, the Pistons were a model of consistency.

They racked up seven straight seasons with at least 50 wins from 2001-02 to 2007-08 – a remarkable achievement in the competitive Eastern Conference.

Gayle believes Dumars’ recent league experience gives him a unique perspective.

"While at the league, he was involved in every aspect of basketball operations and got unparalleled perspective and knowledge of the most effective personnel, strategy and tactics throughout the league," she explained. "That will benefit our team immediately as we move forward."

For Pelicans fans hoping for a turnaround, Dumars’ track record of building winning teams might be exactly what the franchise needs.
