Pelicans Re-Sign Matt Ryan to One-Year Contract

The New Orleans Pelicans have re-signed Matt Ryan on a one-year contract, as reported by Shams Charania.

Ryan, who was waived recently, is now the 15th player on the Pelicans’ roster with this new deal. His contract has been restructured from its previous terms.

Contract Details

At the end of the 2023-24 season, New Orleans converted Ryanโ€™s deal to a standard contract to make him playoff-eligible. However, his three-year deal wasnโ€™t guaranteed for the next two seasons.

If Ryan had stayed under his old contract through the start of the regular season, his salary for 2024-25 would have become guaranteed. Now, he joins 13 other players with guaranteed salaries on the team.

Although specifics about his new contract arenโ€™t clear yet, it might be another minimum-salary agreement that wonโ€™t be guaranteed until January 10th. Spotrac notes that this type of contract would have a cap hit of $2,087,519 instead of $2,196,970.

Performance Highlights

Last season with New Orleans was great for Ryan; he played in 28 games and started once. He averaged career highs: scoring 5.4 points and grabbing 1.4 rebounds per game while playing an average of nearly 14 minutes each contest. His shooting percentages were impressive too: hitting over 43% from the field and more than 45% from three-point range!

In a game against Detroit Pistons on November 2nd last year, he scored a career-high of 20 points! He made seven out of ten shots and six out of eight from beyond the arc during that match.

Unfortunately though… injuries struck him down last season โ€“ right calf strain and elbow injury kept him off-court for several weeks

Fans feel optimistic about his return this season!

โ€œIt sucked,โ€ said Ryan after being sidelined due to injuries last year. โ€œThis is only my third pro year… waiting for opportunities like these.โ€

He added how frustrating it was missing significant minutes when finally given chances but then getting injured again…

The Journey So Far…

Ryan joined Pelicans via waivers last October after signing two-way contracts earlier with Minnesota Timberwolves just before training camp began.
Before joining Pelicans officially – brief stints included Boston Celtics (21-22), Los Angeles Lakers (22-23).
