The Houston Rockets were buzzing just behind the New York Knicks before the 2024 NBA Draft. The Knicks stole the show by trading for Mikal Bridges from the Brooklyn Nets, but the Rockets had their own big plans.
They were rumored to be interested in getting Kevin Durant from the Phoenix Suns. However, Suns owner Mat Ishbia quickly shut down any trade talks.
Rockets’ Star Search Continues:
According to Sam Amick and Anthony Slater of The Athletic, Houston is now looking at star players who are closer in age to their young core. They are eyeing Devin Booker from Phoenix, Donovan Mitchell from Cleveland, and Zion Williamson from New Orleans.
“So, who are the Rockets interested in as franchise centerpiece material?” wrote Amick and Slater. “League sources say that Cleveland’s Donovan Mitchell (who is 27 and widely expected to sign an extension with the Cavs soon), the Suns’ Devin Booker (also 27) and New Orleans’ Zion Williamson (23) would all fit the bill. The only problem, of course, is that none of them are expected to be available anytime soon.”
Mitchell is probably the only one who might be traded after Cleveland’s loss in the 2024 NBA Playoffs. But Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports said most people expect him to sign a new contract with Cleveland .
Fans might think it’s smart for Houston to look at younger stars instead of older ones like Durant.
If nothing changes drastically with these players’ availability, Houston may need a longer list of potential stars if they want to make a move soon.
