As a former teammate of Kevin Durant, LeBron James, and Kawhi Leonard, Russell Westbrook has seen his fair share of greatness up close.
But Nikola Jokic is unlike any player he’s ever shared a locker room with. During the Nuggets’ Media Day, Westbrook couldn’t hide his excitement about playing alongside the reigning three-time NBA MVP, whom he considers "the best player in the world."
Westbrook’s Admiration for Jokic:
"To be on the floor with him is a grateful honor, and I’m grateful for that," Westbrook said on Thursday. "He does so many different things on the floor that allows other people to be great, and I’m just happy to be a part, and not playing against him or scouting against him. I’m able to see his greatness up close, and see the things he’s able to do."
Over the last few years, Jokic earned Westbrook’s respect through his performance in the tough Western Conference. Westbrook mentioned how teams like the Lakers and Clippers struggled to stop Jokic from dominating games.
Mutual Respect Between Players:
The feeling seems mutual. Insiders say
the Nuggets front office to get Westbrook after they lost Kentavious Caldwell-Pope in free agency.
During Media Day interviews, Jokic spoke about his off-court relationship with Westbrook: "I know who he is a little bit outside of the court,"
. "Great teammate, worker and leadership โ the guy who (you) want to listen (to), the guy you want to follow in the gym."
Fans think this pairing could be magic!
Looking Ahead:
The Nuggets could have used Westbrook’s leadership last season when they blew a 20-point lead in Game 7 against the Timberwolves. Many believe he might be the missing piece that helps them win another championship after their 2023 title.
Jokic, Westbrook, and their teammates will start their 2024-25 season against the Thunder on Oct. 24.
Fans are excited about what’s next for this dynamic duo!
