Russell Westbrook and the Los Angeles Clippers seem to be parting ways soon.
Westbrook opted into his $4 million deal for next season, but the Clippers plan to move on. They are exploring trades or might waive him if no team bites. If that happens, the Denver Nuggets are likely to pick him up.
Reports from Tony Jones of The Athletic say there’s a strong interest between Westbrook and the Nuggets. Sources also mention Nikola Jokic likes Westbrook and is open to teaming up with him next season.
The Nuggets need an experienced guard after trading Reggie Jackson and losing Kentavious Caldwell-Pope in free agency. While Westbrook’s scoring isn’t what it used to be, he can still drive to the basket and create opportunities for others. His defense got better last season, showing he’s ready for a supporting role now that he’s older.
Westbrook’s Journey with the Clippers:
Midway through the 2022-23 season, Westbrook joined the Clippers. He started 21 games and averaged 15.8 points per game initially but ended up playing mostly off the bench this past season. In total, he averaged 11.1 points, 5 rebounds, and 4.5 assists over 68 games.
There were rumors that he wasn’t happy with his role in L.A., hinting at his sometimes challenging personality.
Fans might think this change could be good for both sides.
If he’s okay with a new role, Denver could be just right for him now.
