Gregg Popovich is currently away from coaching due to health issues, and the Spurs are worried about his condition.
Concerns Over Popovich’s Health:
During a recent episode of “NBA Today” on ESPN, Shams Charania shared that there’s significant worry within the Spurs organization. He mentioned, “Iโm told that it was a serious health issue that the Spurs dealt with and Gregg Popovich dealt with over the weekend.” This happened before their game against the Timberwolves, where Popovich needed medical assistance in San Antonio. It’s unclear when he will return to coaching.
Mitch Johnson has stepped in as interim coach for now. He took charge during Saturday’s game against the Timberwolves and Monday’s match with the Clippers. He’ll continue this role for Wednesdayโs game against the Rockets.

Uncertainty About His Return:
Mike Finger, a seasoned Spurs reporter, noted that this situation is different from previous times when Popovich missed games due to health reasons. Fans feel it’s best not to expect him back too soon this time around.
Something weโve tried to convey in our coverage of the Popovich story is that this is being handled quite differently from his previous one- and two-game absences.
Still much unknown, with Spurs keeping a very tight circle. Probably wise not to take a quick return for granted.

Communication With The Team:
In earlier reports by Finger, it was revealed that Mitch Johnson spoke with Popovich over the phone on Sunday. However, players have not had direct contact yet. Everyone remains hopeful about his return but can’t predict when it’ll happen.
Michael C. Wright from ESPN shared that according to Johnson, Popovich is at home resting and feeling positive. Johnson stated, “Obviously, the circumstances are unique…but as much continuity and familiarity we can have I think is what we’re looking for.”
Sometimes we just want everything to go back to normal quickly.
Popovich previously missed a game in December 2022 due to health concerns but returned shortly after Brett Brown temporarily took over against the Lakers.
Popovich holds an impressive record as an NBA coach with 1,391 regular-season wins and 170 playoff victories under his belt!
