The San Antonio Spurs are gearing up to build their team around Victor Wembanyama, their superstar center.
They brought in Chris Paul this offseason to lead the team but also tried to trade for other guards. According to Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports, the Spurs contacted the Indiana Pacers and Cleveland Cavaliers about Darius Garland and Andrew Nembhard.
Nembhard just signed a three-year extension with the Pacers, and the Cavaliers have limited trade talks about Garland. Knowing they need a strong point guard for Wembanyama’s pick-and-roll plays, they signed Chris Paul for one year.
San Antonio Spurs’ Pursuit of Guards
The Spurs are not hiding that Victor Wembanyama is their future star. Last season, he proved why he was picked first overall. He won Rookie of the Year by averaging 21.4 points, 1.2 steals, 3.6 blocks (the best in the league), 10.6 rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game while shooting 46.5% from the field.
Gregg Popovich is seen as perfect for coaching young talents like Wembanyama and will ensure he has a solid supporting cast. This need led them to show interest in young guards like Garland and Nembhard, although getting Chris Paul was still a good move due to his experience.
Chris Paul’s Role
Even though Chris Paul isn’t as dominant as he once was, he’s still valuable for guiding Wembanyama’s growth on the court. Some think the Spurs could surprise everyone by making it to the NBA Play-In Tournament this coming season with another year of experience under Wembanyamaโs belt and Popovichโs leadership.
We believe fans are excited about what this new mix can achieve!
Also noteworthy is their high hopes for their draft pick Stephon Castle; all these pieces suggest that San Antonio’s rebuilding phase might soon be over.
