Spurs, Victor Wembanyama Launch New Supporter’s Section

Wemby Wants European-Style Fan Section for Spurs Games

Victor Wembanyama is bringing a taste of European sports culture to San Antonio. The Spurs star has launched plans for a dedicated supporter’s section, with tryouts scheduled for 7 a.m. this Sunday at the Frost Bank Center.

The 7-foot-4 phenom will personally attend the tryouts.

“It’s been an idea,” Wembanyama said. “And now it’s a project.”

The concept draws inspiration from the passionate fan sections Wemby witnessed in European soccer and basketball, according to The Associated Press.

What exactly does this mean for Spurs games? Think non-stop chants, drums, flags, and a whole lot of energy. It’s a far cry from the typical NBA arena experience.

The Spurs aren’t looking for casual fans, either. Those selected must commit to attending at least 75% of home games this season. They’ll need to participate in organized chants and rituals while bringing “passion and respect” to their support.

Membership comes with a price tag of $999.

That might sound steep, but it includes tickets and parking passes to all Spurs home games, exclusive team gear, and a 15% discount at the Spurs Fan Shop.

The group will even get to vote on its own name.

Wembanyama believes this dedicated section could become a real advantage for the team.

“If this group of ultras reaches its full potential, I have no doubt that it’s going to help us win games in the future for sure,” he said.

“I mean, the 41 regular-season games at home this season, that’s 41 opportunities for them to push in the fourth quarter and give us that extra energy and that second wind that can give us the win.”

The timing couldn’t be better as the Spurs prepare for the upcoming season. Training camp opens October 3 at the Victory Capital Performance Center.

After starting with two road games, Wemby and the Spurs will make their home debut on October 26 against the Brooklyn Nets – potentially the first game with their new superfan section in full voice.
