Steph Curry just pulled off something that hadn’t happened in six years – he dunked. And now he says it’s his last one ever.
The Golden State superstar found himself alone under the basket during Saturday’s game against the 76ers. Instead of going for his usual layup, Curry shocked everyone by throwing down a one-handed jam.
It was his first dunk since February 21, 2019, back when the Warriors still played at Oracle Arena.
“I’ve been feeling pretty good,” Curry said after dropping 29 points and 13 assists in the loss to Philadelphia. “But that will probably be my last dunk. I’m calling it right now, that’s the last one you’ll ever see.”
The 36-year-old star had a pretty good reason for the surprise slam. Warriors assistant coach Jerry Stackhouse had been teasing him about not dunking during practice. That’s why Curry pointed right at him on the bench after throwing it down.
“It was a very random comment this morning and the fact that it happened was hilarious,” said Curry, who holds the NBA record for three-pointers. “For sure, I will only lay the ball up from now on. It took everything out of me to get up there.”
His breakaway dunk cut Philadelphia’s lead to 109-104 in the fourth quarter. But it wasn’t enough to keep the Warriors’ winning streak alive.
What makes this dunk extra special? It was Curry’s first – and now last – slam at the Chase Center, the Warriors’ new home court.
Even at nearly 37, Curry’s still putting up impressive numbers this season: 24.1 points, 4.5 rebounds, 6.2 assists and 1.1 steals per game.
He admitted he’s been dealing with knee issues all year, which probably explains why he’s hanging up his dunking shoes for good.
