Two-time MVP Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors have agreed to a one-year, $62.6 million contract extension, according to his agent Jeff Austin.
NBA’s Over-38 Rule Limits Contract Length
This new deal means Curry will stay with the Warriors through the 2026-27 season. Spotrac reports that Curry will soon join LeBron James and Kevin Durant in surpassing $500 million in career earnings. The Warriors had until October 21 to extend Curryโs contract for another year.
Curry was only eligible for a one-year extension because of the NBAโs over-38 rule, which restricts long-term contracts for players who are or will be 38 during the contract period.

The over-38 rule affects stars like Curry and LeBron James by preventing teams from offering them contracts longer than three years if they turn 38 during that time. For Curry, this age milestone comes in March 2026, but it is considered his age-37 season since his birthday is near the end of the regular season.
Curry’s Commitment to Golden State
At 36 years old, Curry has expressed his wish to retire as a Warrior. โIโve always said I want to be a Warrior for life,โ he told Andscape in July. General Manager Mike Dunleavy shared confidence in re-signing him, believing Curry could “get whatever he wants.”
Last season, Curry played 77 games averaging 26.4 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game while shooting an impressive 45% from the field and nearly 41% from beyond the arc.
He also earned the title of NBA Clutch Player of the Year for the 2023-24 season by outscoring DeMar DeRozan and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in clutch moments with a league-leading total of clutch points (189) and three-pointers (357).
Warriors Roster Changes
Golden State missed last year’s playoffs with a record of 46-36 after losing to Sacramento Kings in the play-in tournament as No.10 seedโmarking their first postseason miss since 2020-21.
Despite keeping competitive hopes alive with Stephen Curry leading them forward into what many see as a new era without Klay Thompsonโwho signed with Dallas Mavericks after spending thirteen seasons at Golden Stateโthe team also waived Chris Paul instead of guaranteeing him $30 million next year.
We think fans are excited yet nervous about these changes!
The Warriors plan on building around veterans like Draymond Green while nurturing young talents such as Jonathan Kuminga (eligible now up-to-$215-million extension), Brandin Podziemski & Trayce Jackson-Davis alongside newcomers Buddy Hield; Kyle Anderson & DeโAnthony Melton added this offseason adding depth & potential dynamism into their squad mix!
