Grayson Allen returned to Duke for his usual summer visit, working out at the Michael W. Krzyzewski Center for Athletic Excellence.
Reconnecting with Coach Scheyer:
Allen caught up with Jon Scheyer, who was an assistant during Allen’s college days. โGot some workouts in with Coach Scheyer like the old days,โ Allen said on the first episode of this seasonโs Duke Blue Planet, now on YouTube.
โSeeing the head coach back running individual workouts was cool,โ he added. โWe stay in touch often, so it was great to squeeze in a workout while Iโm here.โ
Shared Achievements:
Both Allen and Scheyer are among five Duke players to score over 1,900 points, grab 400 rebounds, and dish out 400 assists. The other three are Grant Hill, Danny Ferry, and Johnny Dawkins. Grayson is Dukeโs 12th all-time leading scorer with 1,996 points.
Offseason Training:
Videos online show Grayson’s dedication to training through shooting drills and weightlifting sessions. โIโm focusing on explosive stuff to get ready for training camp,โ he said. โShots I got last season playing with these guys.โ
Fans love seeing this kind of commitment from their favorite players.
Injury Setback:
Allen missed last seasonโs final playoff games due to an ankle injury against the Timberwolves. He sprained his ankle in Game 1 and re-injured it by Game 3.
โIโve built a strong base,โ he mentioned. โNow itโs about speed and explosion workโplyometrics and moving weights faster.โ
Looking Ahead:
The Phoenix Suns are gearing up for their opener against the Clippers on October 23rd. Meanwhile, Grayson is preparing for whatever role awaits him this season.
He also practiced with Tyrese Proctor from Duke: โJust shooting with Tyrese and sharing my thoughts on off-ball mentality,โ he explained. โReading defenders’ positions before catching the ball can give you more space and time.โ
