Jayson Tatum finally spoke to the press after being benched during Team USA’s first game against Serbia in the Paris Olympic Games.
Humbling Experience
Tatum shared that sitting out an entire game was a humbling experience for him. Despite playing 17 minutes in a later game against South Sudan, he found it eye-opening. “Definitely a humbling experience, right?” he said.
Reflecting on his recent achievements like winning a championship, signing a new contract, and appearing on the cover of NBA 2K and Sports Illustrated, Tatum admitted that being benched was quite grounding. After returning to play and scoring four points against South Sudan, he emphasized how it felt like a reality check.
"I don't think it was humbling. This was more like a slap in the face."

Joel Embiid Benched
When Tatum returned to the starting lineup, Joel Embiid had to sit out an entire game against South Sudan. The former MVP averaged 34.7 points per game last season but wasn’t chosen for this match by Steve Kerr. Instead, Kerr opted for faster players over Embiid for tactical reasons.
Fans think it’s tough seeing such talented players benched.
Steve Kerr’s Perspective
Steve Kerr explained that decisions like these often create drama due to the NBA’s global popularity and social media influence. “I think we need to give these guys more credit,” said Kerr. “Theyโre here to win a gold medal.”
Out of Team USAโs 11 All-Star players, Derrick White stands out even though he’s not an All-Star himself due to his excellent defense. โDerrick Whiteโs a phenomenal basketball player,โ Kerr praised.
Commitment to Gold
LeBron James and Steph Curry lead the team in minutes played with Devin Booker close behind. Coach Kerr believes all his players are top talents committed to their collective goal: winning gold.
โWe’re just trying to win every game and win a gold medal,โ concluded Kerr after three consecutive wins in Paris.
