An NBA roster can change dramatically with just a few new players.
While raw talent is important, sometimes the right fit matters more. This offseason, some of the league’s worst teams have made moves that could lead to big improvements next year.
Here are three teams that seem to have gotten better:
Detroit Pistons
Last season, the Pistons had a rough time with only 14 wins. But this summer, they made some bold moves. They signed Tobias Harris for two years at $52M. Sure, it’s a lot of money, but after such a bad season, they needed to make a splash. Harris might not always be consistentโSixers fans know this wellโbut he’s still their best wing scorer now.
They also traded Quentin Grimes for Tim Hardaway Jr., who has plenty left in the tank despite falling out of favor with the Mavericks during the playoffs. Adding Malik Beasley and Paul Reed for depth was smart too.
No one expects Detroit to win big next season or even make the playoffs. However, with these new additions and another year of growth for Jalen Duren, Ausar Thompson, and Cade Cunningham, they should be more competitive than they’ve been in years.
Adding an experienced point guard can change everything for a team. San Antonio signing 39-year-old Chris Paul was surprising but intriguing after he was let go by Golden State Warriors.
If Paul has one good season left in him , he could help Victor Wembanyama reach his potential as an All-NBA player or even an MVP candidate sooner than expected. Playing alongside such a smart player will speed up Wemby’s development significantly.
Fans might think this move is risky due to Paul’s age but it shows how serious San Antonio is about improving quickly.
With Wemby already showing promise and adding Harrison Barnes into the mix tooโthey’re set up nicely for improvement next season!
This one’s tricky because last year’s Memphis Grizzlies weren’t really themselves due to numerous injuries which turned them into almost like a G League team winning just 27 games!
Heading into 2024-25 thoughโthey have potential! Some folks might even say top three finish in Western Conference (or maybe winning it if feeling adventurous).
Their bounce back depends less on new signings but more on getting their injured players back healthy again!
None played over 70 games last season except Jaren Jackson Jr., while key contributors missed half or more matches! Ja Morant along with Desmond Bane & JJJ form solid core; add Marcus Smart plus Luke Kennard & othersโthey’ve got depth now including emerging talents like Vince Williams & GG Jackson giving options galore!
What do you think about these changes? Will these teams surprise us next season?
