Victor Wembanyama might miss tonight’s game against the Phoenix Suns due to illness, leaving the Spurs without their superstar rookie for their special matchup in Austin.
The game’s being played at the University of Texas’s Moody Center – the same court where Kevin Durant played his college ball. It’s about an hour and a half drive from San Antonio, part of the Spurs’ yearly tradition of bringing NBA action to the state capital.
The timing couldn’t be worse for San Antonio. They’ve struggled without their 7-foot-4 phenom this season, going just 2-4 when he’s out.
Vegas isn’t feeling optimistic either, with the Spurs listed as 3-point underdogs against Phoenix.
But here’s the weird part – the Suns aren’t exactly hot right now. They’ve lost 6 of their last 7 games, even though they’ve historically owned this matchup, winning 11 of their last 14 against San Antonio.
Wemby’s been absolutely crushing it this year. The 21-year-old rookie is putting up some wild numbers:
– 24.3 points per game
– 11 rebounds
– Nearly 4 blocks (leads the entire NBA)
– Shooting 48% from the field
– Hitting 35% from three-point range
He’s not just blocking shots – he’s swatting them away at a ridiculous rate. His 176 blocks and 10.1% block percentage both lead the league.
Remember that game against Washington back in November? The kid dropped 50 points, hitting 18 of 29 shots including 8 three-pointers. Pretty incredible for someone who’s basically still getting used to the NBA.
The Spurs will play again tomorrow night in Austin against Detroit. But right now, all eyes are on whether their young superstar can shake off this illness in time for tipoff.
