Kevin Durant could be heading back to the Bay Area, and it might happen sooner than you think. The Phoenix Suns superstar, who won two Finals MVPs with Golden State against LeBron’s Cavaliers in 2017 and 2018, might reunite with his old team before the February 6 trade deadline.
Times have changed for the Warriors. When they first got Durant in 2016, they were already dominant. Now? They really need the help.
A new trade proposal from Bleacher Report’s Grant Hughes has caught everyone’s attention. It’s a big one: Durant for Andrew Wiggins, Jonathan Kuminga, Kevon Looney, Gary Payton II, and two first-round draft picks.
The Suns would need to clear some roster spots to make it work, but they’d get quite a haul.
What’s in it for Phoenix? They’d get Kuminga, who’s showing signs of becoming a star. They’d also pick up Wiggins, a solid 3-and-D wing player, plus some flexible contracts in Payton and Looney worth about $17 million that expire soon.
Oh, and those two first-round picks? They’re for 2026 and 2028.
There’s just one catch – Durant would need to ask for the trade himself.
The deal could help Phoenix build a deeper team around Devin Booker. They’re stuck with Bradley Beal’s massive contract – worth over $251 million – and he’s not going anywhere. ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne reports Beal’s determined to keep his no-trade clause, even if Phoenix tries to move him.
Money talks, and in Durant’s case, it’s saying a lot. He could sign a two-year extension worth $123.8 million in the coming months. But he’s playing it smart – by waiting, he’ll make an extra $64.3 million.
Right now, Durant’s putting up incredible numbers at age 36. He’s averaging 27.3 points per game, shooting over 52% from the field, and playing 36 minutes a night. Pretty impressive for a veteran in his 17th season.
The Suns just got Durant from Brooklyn last February, but in the NBA, things can change fast. His current deal pays him $51.17 million this season and jumps to $54.7 million in 2025-26.
