Stephen Curry will turn 37 next March, and the Warriors are feeling the heat to make the most of his remaining prime years.
Currently, their roster isnโt strong enough to compete for a title, as shown by their long-shot odds. To improve quickly, they might need to trade young players like Brandin Podziemski, Jonathan Kuminga, or Moses Moody for experienced stars.
Fans and analysts think it’s crucial for the Warriors to give Curry the support he needs for a fifth NBA title. However, Joe Lacob doesn’t see it as urgent.
In an interview on the “Hoops Adjacent” podcast, Lacob stated that they won’t rush into trades just to build a championship team around Curry. He said:
> “Marcus, you’re assuming that by trading all of your emerging young players, potentially young stars, that you are going to be better,” Lacob told The Athletic’s Marcus Thompson. “We run analytical models on all that stuff. We will make the deal that makes us better. We look at the short term and the intermediate term and, to some extent, long term as well, but that’s a factor.”
Warriors’ Financial Strategy:
Lacob mentioned their careful spending approach regarding Klay Thompson and staying under the luxury-tax threshold โa goal they achieved in 2024 offseason.
> “So within reason,” Lacob emphasized, “we’re going to always try to do whatever we can to win now. Not just for Steph but for me… For our fans… I think Steph’s got a number of years left… We’re aware of it every single day.”
Fans might feel torn about prioritizing future stability over immediate success.
After failing in their attempt to get Paul George (https://www.yardbarker.com/nba/articles/draymond_green_salty_warriors_struck_out_on_paul_george/s1_13132_40564587), they’re now eyeing Jazz All-Star Lauri Markkanen. To get him would likely mean giving up Kuminga or Podziemski plus draft picksโa tough call indeed.
What do you think? Should they go all-in now or play it safe?
