The Warriors are betting big on rookie Will Richard, signing the 22-year-old to a four-year deal with two years fully guaranteed.
Richard, who was acquired from Memphis on draft night, impressed during summer league action, averaging 11.5 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.8 steals across six games.
Golden State traded the rights to 59th pick Jahmai Mashack, guard Justinian Jessup, and a 2032 second-round pick to land Richard, the 56th overall selection.
“Golden State’s No. 56 pick Will Richard is signing a four-year contract, with two years fully guaranteed as the Warriors invest long-term in the rookie,” reported Shams Charania of ESPN.
Richard brings championship experience to the Warriors. He started all 40 games during Florida’s national title run last season, putting up solid numbers across the board – 13.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 1.7 steals per game.
Though older than many rookies at 22, Richard’s polished game could help him contribute immediately.
The Warriors are hoping Richard can quickly adapt to the NBA and become a key rotational piece for head coach Steve Kerr when the season tips off against the Lakers on Tuesday, October 31.
Richard joins a promising young core that includes Brandin Podziemski, Moses Moody, Quinten Post, and Gui Santos – a group Golden State is developing alongside veterans Steph Curry, Draymond Green, and Jimmy Butler.
Podziemski has already made his mark, appearing in 138 games with 61 starts over two seasons. Moody brings even more experience with 255 games and 57 starts across four years. Post contributed significantly as a rookie last season, playing in 42 games with 14 starts.
Can Richard carve out a similar role in his first season? The Warriors clearly think so, investing in the Florida product with a multi-year commitment that signals their belief in his potential.
This young core could form an impressive second unit while potentially representing the franchise’s future once the veteran stars move on.
