Will the Philadelphia 76ers re-sign Quentin Grimes in the offseason

Philadelphia’s season has been a complete disaster. Injuries have plagued the 76ers, with Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and Paul George all missing significant time.

After Wednesday’s loss to the Wizards, Philly sits at a dismal 23-50 this season.

But amid the wreckage, one player has seized his opportunity. Quentin Grimes has been on fire since joining the 76ers via trade from Dallas, starting 18 of his 21 games and putting up an impressive 22.1 points per game.

The question now: Will the Sixers lock him up this offseason?

Grimes has been absolutely lighting it up in Philadelphia. In a recent game against Houston, he exploded for a career-high 46 points and 13 rebounds, joining Embiid as the only players in franchise history to post those numbers in a single game.

His journey to this point hasn’t been straightforward. The Knicks selected Grimes with the 25th pick in the 2021 draft out of Houston. He spent three seasons in New York, appearing in 162 games with 90 starts before being shipped to Detroit last season.

After finishing the year with the Pistons, Grimes landed in Dallas for the start of this season.

The Mavericks then traded him along with a second-round pick to the 76ers in exchange for Caleb Martin. That move might be the only bright spot in Philadelphia’s otherwise forgettable season.

The 24-year-old is having the best stretch of his career with the Sixers.

In his 18 starts for Philadelphia, Grimes has topped 20 points twelve times. He’s currently on a nine-game streak of scoring 22 or more points.

This hot streak puts real pressure on the Sixers’ front office. They’d face serious backlash from fans if they let Grimes walk after seeing what he can do.

Sure, his role is bigger right now because the stars are out. But that doesn’t change the fact that he’s making the most of his chance.

Grimes has proven he deserves an extension with Philadelphia. The question is whether the front office will make it happen when free agency begins.
