Zion Williamson finally showed the NBA what he’s truly capable of, dropping his first career triple-double in the Pelicans’ 124-116 win over Phoenix Thursday night.
The 24-year-old star put up 27 points, 10 rebounds, and 11 assists in just 31 minutes of play. It’s the kind of performance that reminds everyone why he was the No. 1 pick in the 2019 draft.
“It’s a reminder to the NBA, to the fans, to everybody,” Pelicans coach Willie Green said. “This is who he can be, night in and night out.”
Injuries have been Zion’s biggest enemy since entering the league. But when he’s healthy, he’s nearly unstoppable.
The moment was extra special for Williamson, who grabbed his final rebound with just 1:36 left in the game. His teammates erupted in celebration when he secured the triple-double.
“It’s dope,” Williamson said after the game, grinning. “There have been so many times when I felt it could have happened, but I never forced the issue. Tonight, my teammates were like, ‘No, you’ve got to get it tonight.'”
What’s even more impressive? Zion’s doing all this while being in the best shape of his career. The powerful forward is reportedly at his lowest playing weight ever, though he still carries an impressive 284 pounds on his athletic frame.
He’s putting up career numbers across the board this season:
– 24.2 points per game
– 7.4 rebounds
– 4.7 assists
– All while playing just 28 minutes per night
The win marked New Orleans’ third straight victory, matching their longest streak of the season. Though at 16-43, they’re still near the bottom of the Western Conference.
“These nights are big for the confidence and a reminder of who I am,” Williamson said. If he can stay healthy, performances like this might become the new normal for one of the NBA’s most unique talents.
